BESTE OGAN

Perth ceramicist and potter - porcelain homewares.

“As a designer-maker, I strive to create 'textures to touch' - intimate functional ceramic objects that make you not want to let go once you hold them; timeless designs that are a pleasure to use everyday. They celebrate 'the beauty of the imperfect', reflecting colours, textures and forms derived from nature”. - Beste

THE NUTSHELL.

There is nothing more tactile than the feeling of picking up a piece of pottery and just holding it in your hands.

Take the TABAK leather series for example, a pottery series which impersonates distressed leather. So accurate is the casting, the imperfections, the feel, I couldn’t quite figure out how Beste had got the leather to mesh with the porcelain inside so seamlessly ? The artisan details such that I just couldn’t comprehend the craftsmanship.

If I could explain the look she gave me at the time I’m sure it would be something crossed between that feeling you get when you wave at someone you think you know but it turns out to be somebody else, and a pleasing smile you’d get from a stranger for a good deed. Slightly OMG yet so inwardly proud ?

Each series and form, tugs on the connection to Turkey.

Beste’s very best childhood moments spent in the Aegean Islands brought into porcelain form, from it’s pebbled & driftwood beaches, to little hands helping in the kitchen, to clear waters, organic natural forms, and long family mezze lunches. The touch and feel experience is so very strong.

Each object is intimate and emotional, so when you pick them up you are in no hurry to replace it.

And the most beautiful thing about Beste’s wares, is that they are transferable to everyone’s little rituals. They are perfect that way of being able to capture your own moments in time.
