Perth Ceramics. A Daily Guide To Handmade.

Perth ceramicists

Ceramics is a practice I know very little about but very much love the idea of.

The movie Ghost did little to motivate me to get behind a pottery wheel and dirty up, if anything, I wonder if that movie is the very cringe of creativity itself ? But I do have a divine middle child who is obsessed with clay and the muddy love that goes with it.

He makes only when he’s in the mood but when he does, it can go for hours on end, as he refines, smooths, and makes it not quite perfectly ‘just so’. I see the hours that go into it as a hobby - imagine what goes into it so when you sip your coffee the handle doesn’t fall off. [ Speaking of handles, Izzett Design is obsessed with them ! ].

So what makes a great potter or ceramicist ?

What drives their slow approach to handmade so attractive ?

What makes us so obsessed with those objects born from lumps of clay ?

I think it’s the fact that they patiently made it with their hands. They got dirty and they likely made it across many, many moments in time - so that each piece, is date stamped whether it is or it isn’t?

When you buy from a small batch, a limited edition object made with intention, you are buying a true artisan piece whether it cost a lot or a little.

So let’s hear it for our master craftswomen [ men if you are out there throwing some clay, get in touch ! ]; and I hope you enjoy this incredible collection of Perth ceramicists, potters and makers that are sharing their wares to make our lives just a little bit richer.
