IZZETT DESIGN

Perth pottery - Kirsten Izzett

“I have a huge thing about making properly functional and not just beautiful items, especially mugs. Really bugs me when people put sh*t handles on a gorgeous mug. I am less likely to use a mug that is uncomfortable, no matter how cool or pretty it is!!! I am a handle snob for sure (if such a thing exists!).” - Kirsten.

NOTE TO SELF : Check the handles first !

THE NUTSHELL.

There is a wickedly passionate ‘way’ about Kirsten I can’t quite put my finger on, but if I were to have a stab it’s the hands on approach to craftsmanship she applies every step of the way.

Having studied Interior Architecture, and having spent years creating custom cabinetry design for clients via her ‘day job’ - Kirsten has made the leap fulltime into pottery by focusing on developing honest relationships between everyday items and how it makes us ‘FEEL’ when we use them in our home.

There is a warmth here; an emotional connection ‘to the objec't’ not just the object itself and that’s likely because of her longstanding relationship with design.

Small batch ceramics, handmade/handmade pottery, functional ceramics are the best ways to describe the brand of Izzett. Environmentally conscious at every turn, all manner of approaches are used to ensure ‘all the bits’ can be repurposed including :

  • wheelthrown techniques - for mugs/tumblers and sugar bowls

  • handbuilt/handbuilding (not on the wheel) - for garlic graters, salad bowls, soap dishes

  • pinch pot - (how it sounds) to make little trinket bowls with legs to maintain the uneven finish of using fingers

And there’s actually nothing nicer than having an item made for you, as an anchor to your daily rituals !
