Jardan Perth. An unexpected footprint proving there’s no place like home.

Whether you are familiar with the name Jardan or not, the likelihood is you have recently become very familiar with their floors!

From The Design Files to Vogue Living and every influencer & local designer in between, the breathtaking terrazzo is not only the talk of the town but is very likely to shape new trends alike heading into 2021. Typically; I would cringe at the thought but if it inspires others to push their flooring boundaries, then this is one #fromwhereistood that I endorse wholeheartedly & unashamedly [ insert another Deb foot shot here ! ].

But I don’t want it to start and finish with social sharing. It’s far too momentary a glimpse as to what this brand stands for. As I attended the launch last Thursday, I looked around the room at attendees and realised; so many of the beautiful captures of this undeniably stunning flagship store in Peppermint Grove would only get the limited currency of an instagram story. That’s just a bit sad.

a little backstory

Jardan; a privately owned and operated Australian furniture manufacturer has actually been at the forefront of Australian made since it’s inception in 1987. More than that - the business has also been certified ‘carbon neutral’ since 2013. I’ll leave you for a moment to take that in.

It was 7 years ago.

Here’s what carbon neutrality looks like. Image via Climate Active

As you can see from this infographic, there is an offset component that contributes to the neutrality, and Jardan have chosen to support the Max Waters Reforestation Project 2.

“The Max Waters project plants mallee and tree-form eucalyptus strategically through four farms in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, near the towns of Wagin, Quairading and Kojonup, expressly for the purpose of carbon abatement. Plantings are providing forest cover and stability along creek lines, in strips through light paddocks which will allow continued grazing in the paddocks and in small blocks within paddocks.” - Climate Active website.

It seems even before the flagship they were passionate about the west. But aside from that, they are passionate about sustainability period; and ‘the land’ in this epic country of ours is something Jardan honestly lives and breathes.

Let’s take a quick look around the country at what IF Architecture have created for this quintessential Australian brand and let’s see how each city and it’s surrounds has inspired the same sense of warmth but also 4 very unique spaces.

Jardan Sydney

“The design of the Sydney showroom reflects this, with a colour palette inspired by art and design families connected to the local area – the likes of John Olsen and his daughter Louise, co-founder of Dinosaur Designs, and Brett Whiteley. This is perhaps most noticeable in the warm pink of the central stairway. In plan, the stairs’ sweeping curves describe a naïve heart-shape; in practice, its colour and warmth, and its organic, sculptural form, entice visitors to explore all three levels of the showroom.” - IF

Jardan Melbourne

Undoubtedly; floors are a major consideration throughout each store but I find it decidedly detailed that the breezeblocks just happen to mirror the Jardan logo to perfection. A coincidence? Unlikely.

“Every decorator item in the store is individually selected: from paintings, sculpture and artwork; to the eclectic collection of decorative pieces; to the real books on the bookshelves; to the trees and plants that bring a fresh natural feel to the space.

In contrast with most stores, here the visitor is encouraged to take their time, wander and explore, to ‘live’ in the space.” - IF

Jardan Perth

The store you’ve clearly been waiting for. As you’ve witnessed in this virtual tour, each showroom is unique to it’s location & demographic. The details are remarkable and the new flagship in Perth far outweighed my expectations, not just because of the aesthetic feast it provides, but because it actually reminds you that living in WA, and growing up in WA leaves a lasting impression.

More like a body hug than a chair, the Jarden Wilfred chair is covered with a gorgeously textural material that reminds me of my favourite terry towelling dress I used to wear to Cottesloe beach (umm, just down the road in fact).

Cue the limestone walls. If you don’t get a sense of coastline when you see walls like this you may be on the wrong blog. Think Fremantle, think salty air and then go and integrate the palette of Kings Park, wildflowers, sunsets, blue water, hot days, and warm nights. All of those senses are in this showroom. Again, childhood comes to mind and sitting on warm limestone walls with a melting Buffalo Bill dripping down my hands staring into the ocean at Cott. That Jardan Joy Chair the perfect sand dune to collapse into. Epic!

But I guess the purpose of this article wasn’t to take you on a trip down memory lane (although the fact that it does that only places greater emphasis on how special the product is throughout, and would be for a lifetime) it was simply to remind you that this brand, whilst potentially new on your radar, did not happen overnight. Each piece is crafted to order, by hand. Looking at the pieces as a collective in-situ all around the country, that is no mean feat and you come to really understand that good design and it’s impact has been at the very core of this business long before #sustainableliving was a hashtag apple of the environment’s eye.

I bang on about longevity of purchase, design consideration, conscious consumption because from where I sit I get a ‘very lot’ of offers to get into bed with brands in exchange for cash money. There’s no getting around it. Your passion creates influence. It’s the best and worst business decision I make each day if I’m honest - but I make it with absolute integrity as my compass. To me, education around a brand is the true value and the biggest currency, so whether you are compelled to invest in the thoughtfully curated pieces throughout the showroom or are simply inspired by them, understanding that there are brands in our local landscape that really walk the walk when it comes to sustainable practices is to be celebrated.

Welcome Jardan Perth.
