7 Types of interiors mums and what to buy them for the home - Perth Mothers Day gift guide

In this edition of #shoppingwithdeb, I’ve decided to take a slightly different approach to Mothers Day. I’ve asked around and it seems between all the, isolating, delegating, integrating, mediating, educating - the very essence of what makes it fun to be a mum might be sorely missing.

As you all know I love to #supportlocalperth (as in I actually do it); and I also love #gettingbehinddesign in Perth. To celebrate that fact (and because I also fancy myself as some kind of demi-designer-in-training), I thought I would also throw you my Mothers Day edit this year but with a very Spreading Roomers twist. Let’s just say, it’s tongue-in-cheek and designed to make you ugly face laugh.

The community you join when you become a mum is unlike anything you’ve experienced before. I won’t go into the good, the bad and the ugly of this new crew, sufficed to say that once the dust settles and we grow into our patriarchal personalities, a few clear tell-tale signs of what kind of Interiors Mum we are start to emerge.

Follow me if you will - and don’t forget to comment at the end with which mum you are (or how many you are!!) & share it with your family. It’s basically doing them a favour and handing them a catalogue.

We all know….

THE ARTISAN MUM - so yeah, if it’s not handmade, locally sourced, limited run, small batch, of superior quality and created using the skill levels of years gone by, you’re stuffed. This mum is also the master crafter of the house, and can whip up a preserve with her actual eyes closed with a recipe she learned while living abroad. Both a bonafide creative & devout small business champion she is ethically enlightened in every sense of the word. Please also serve her breakfast with a hand pressed compote, suburban milled gluten free bread, a local publication that has those textured type pages & hand-painted card, on in-house (that would be yours) cotton rag.

THE STYLISH MUM - self explanatory, this is the mum we secretly admire and openly want our team. She admits parenting is equal parts rewarding and irritating & and isn’t ashamed in the least to suggest that morning tea should come with mandatory Dom chaser. Her home is very much a home but with an edge; her children fully across the do’s and dont’s of ‘sofa law’ & she’s always banging on about that sideboard she sourced the other day. She likes to live a little and we love her for it. She has good shoes.

THE SUSTAINABLE MUM - Wakes up before the entire house to pluck herbs from the worm wee sponsored veggie patch, to serve with the free-range eggs her hens thoughtfully laid just minutes before. Her kids know how to sew their own wardrobe & know more about Kimchi than they do about Xbox. NOTHING, let me repeat NOTHING will enter the threshold of this home that isn’t good for the planet, low foot-print, carbon neutral, repurposed, sustainably sourced, low-tox or supportive of the circular economy. Before she enters the room, the butterflies announce her arrival.

THE SENSORY MUM - We love this mum because her house always smells like either delicious baked goods or a woodlands retreat. A coffee lover and gin enthusiast, this adorable woman spends her weekends recreating the last supper for her family, enjoys long walks on the beach foraging & days wiled away in the garden (gin often in hand). She invented the ‘creased’ look when it comes to bedding, LOVES the stinky cheese more than most and has a candle obsession. Currently 14,328 and counting. Her husband turns a blind eye because she cooks like an absolute demon.

THE CELESTIAL MUM - As the earth aligns in Venus under the spectrum of Saturn the citrine will ignite your manifestations and energise your soul being on the 10th day in the house of Sebastian. LOVES crystals, constellations, earth, moon, stars, and sageing. She is sage. And owns crystals the size of your head & would mortgage the house to buy more. They sit on a stack of very attractive coffee table books. Sponsored by Dymocks in the house of Sebastian.

THE ECLECTIC MUM - Goes all in. A colour poppin, heart stoppin, loves it because she loves it not because it all goes together, backs her individuality kind of mum. Heirlooms are her thang, Vinnies is her David Jones and she makes hectic look like the rest of us have a stick up our ass. The very essence of the perfect clash, whether mixing texture, pattern or colour, this goddess is Anna Wintour meets The Jungalow. Clearly #greenthumbobsessed, she has the most enviable collection of plants & florals that always look speccy AF. You all secretly steal something every time you visit. The kids film you doing it.

THE MOTHER BOARD - Basically Mary Poppins but with a side of gangster. Is balanced in her efforts to run her small business and loves an excuse to get creative with her little people; we love this mum because she’s part cool mum part total badass. Owns MORE pots than living plants (those that survive are usually cactus). For this reason she’s a lover of fresh flowers - because she is incapable of growing her own. Happily lie’s and says she loves a macaroni necklace even though she has 27 others already. Annually organises her own gift to make dad look good & actually reads all the books ‘Celestial Mum’ uses to prop up her crystal collection. Swears like a sailor. Is architecture obsessed but has had it up to here with breeze blocks.

Now; I know what you’re all thinking. I’m a a little bit of ALL of them, and truthfully, that is the whole point. I have days where I’m edgy AF and days where my kids won’t walk next to me (and there’s the time I got pushed out of a hug by my face by my now 11 year old, but that’s a whole other story). I have days where my diet consists of solely of coffee, and others where I lovingly prepare a very organic, vegan plethora of delights for my brood. The point is, this was fun wasn’t it? Isn’t time us mums had a little fun?

Actually - push comes to shove I’m a touch of Artisan Mum with a smatter of Mother Board. I sadly wish I was the Stylish Mum but I lack instinctive ‘designory’ awareness, and I quite like the sound of Eclectic Mum - which by far is almost me to a tee, except my plants are life challenged, and have a seemingly low expectancy rate.

But what I loved most about pulling together this blog for you - is that I got to create a super accessible gift guide from trusted homewares & interiors brands around Perth, that hopefully made you smile. Now be honest with me, did it work?

Please share this post with anyone you know could use that same bit of Perth local love & laughter. See you soon.
