Perth's best pet friendly interior designs for your home

It’s all about the fur baby. That slobbering, boisterous, barking mad but beloved part of our family that we would literally take a bullet for, it turns out - we would also create a home for.

More than just a dog or a walking companion, the fur baby is unique because they love unconditionally. No other blood relation makes that promise (I’m sure we’ve all witnessed the mad unravelling of nerves or patience at a family gathering or two). No wonder there are #dogsofinstagram living like royalty (and just quietly amassing a gazillion followers whilst they are at it).

But with our homes becoming smaller, our way of living getting more frantic & needing to squeeze every ounce of space for greater functionality & smarter living options, i started to see a new design brief emerging in Perth - and all of the designers behind them can be found in our good design directory. Not surprising.

I never thought I would get this excited about dogs. I’m a cat person. They are low maintenance and sometimes, a little asshole. I’m ok with it. They don't sign up for companionship. You feed me and I don’t eat you in you in your sleep. It’s a fair exchange; but if these canine inspired spaces don’t get you really bloody excited about how clever design can make sharing your abode with the royal pooch 100 times more attractive, I don’t know what will.

SilQ Interiors - The Laundry Renovation

Belinda Kailis from SilQ Interiors took this everyday laundry and turned it on it’s head. A laundry can be drab at the best of times but this was unexpected. By optimising space, changing the layout and creating a special ‘dog wash’ in house to cater for the grub loving dog who continued to walk sand through the house post beach walks, this transformation has to be one of the most stylish on the inter webs.

Beautiful choice of tile, timeless finishes and taps at a height that reduces constant water loss and splash back (and saves your back as well) - it’s likely to double as a mud room design any day now (insert - kids come home from school, disrobe at the door - take a mini shower - deed is done!). Everybody wins.

Jess O’Shea Designs - The Pet Zone

Jess is a crazy stupid dog lover herself, so this one was an absolute no-brainer for this freelance designer. There’s not a weekend goes by that Jess & her English Bull Terrier Poncho aren’t living the life fantastic - which is actually the best bit really. A designer who understands the demands and needs of caring and living with a active dog full-time is the very best person to deliver the brief.

The Pet Zone to me is pure class. Designed for Webb Brown Neaves with Joe Calsara alongside fellow directory member & Interior Design on the Palm Springs display home - Melissa Redwood; there’s no tripping over dog bowls in the laundry, no trashed furniture, seamlessly integrated to it’s surrounds. It’s an intelligent approach to modern day living with a dog. By creating a dedicated zone that values function and doesn’t compromise on style, this family will save on sanity without sacrificing any of their own living space.

Premier Concrete - The Trough

How to create a water trough as a statement piece! I saved this project on my instagram in an instant of seeing it without even knowing who had delivered it. Of course it was Premier Concrete. There’s little this business cannot deliver in terms of concrete application and to be honest, it has to be one of the smartest approaches to living with dogs I have seen in the Perth design scene. Actually scratch that, in the Australian design scene.

Outdoor living is a pastime that we West Ausssie’s will never tire of, and this trough approach is basically the ‘hound’ equivalent of a designer outdoor shower. We love the inside outside approach in aesthetic and by creating this bespoke concrete water trough; the family can actually enjoy their outdoor space without endless mess ensuing. Did you ever think a beautifully designed landscape would integrate functionality so, so well? This makes total sense and yet, it remains a prime example of how a little outside the box thinking can deliver design goodness in spades.

Take a bow Premier. New standards are set high and clearly; there’s little concrete cannot do.

Now, as with anything in the design arena, there are careful considerations to factor. Construction for one, budget, materiality, application, layout - the list goes on. It’s no different to wanting a 4th bedroom, or an outdoor kitchen - integrated spaces, specifically designed with a tangible outcome in mind are always best run by your designer and their team.

It takes multiple trades, and professionals to pull off each of these designs - with each designer also carefully specifying all finishes along the way to ensure cohesion across the project or renovation so to find out more about these designs and how you can experience the same in your home or renovation, feel free to get in touch with talented businesses featured.

In the meantime; don’t forget to share this piece with your dog loving, designer loving friends. No matter how big or a small a space, there is always a designer on hand in the good design directory to bring your requirements to life.
