Before we jump straight into the Instagram stalking, let’s stop to consider that #secondhandseptember is a movement that was conceived in 2019 by Oxfam UK as a way to “Say yes to less”. The idea is that you shop only second hand wardrobe items for the month of September. That’s every - single - item - of -clothing - ladies!

But, this is not a fashion blog and I’m no clothes horse (you have no idea how thrilled I was when hoodies become a daily rotation). This is a place to discover #goodesign, namely that of the Perth architectural, building, craftsmen or interiors variety - so this article is all about arming you with motivation to source more local, pre-loved pieces for your home by gifting you a hit list worth stalking.

Luckily for us, the movement has ‘grown’ and now represents all facets of the avid collectors playbook, so it’s not just clothing or fashion, it’s decor, furniture, art, books, textiles and furniture too (especially perfect if mid-century modern tickles your fancy).

If you read my recent post about my upbringing you would also know I grew up sparingly and wouldn’t have made it through without pre-loved and second hand. Back then, it wasn’t trending and it was emotionally very hard, so this movement to me has real depth.

All I ask is that you put it to bloody good use. #secondhandseptember is not for the faint hearted.

You are by oath of reading this blog committing to shop in a less but more thoughtful capacity. You are purposefully seeking quality, pre-loved, era’s past, life still left furniture and homewares that deserve a longer life because waste, and fast fashion or furniture are epically bad for our planet.

Spit on your hand and repeat after me “I am a conscious consumer. I take this vow as a lifetime commitment to seeking out second-hand; not just in September, but for the ages! I’m going to live more gently on this earth. Nicely done. I heard you all from here.

Let’s kick it.
